CHAPTER 20

Ryder

Piper’s chin dimpled, and she sucked in a jerky breath. “I . . . I tried to fight them, but—”

I brushed her hair back from her face. “It’s okay. Tell me what else happened.”

“Why did they take her?” Tears spilled over her lashes and rolled down her cheeks.

“I don’t know. But she’ll be okay.”

“She’s not okay.” Wincing, she shifted in her seat so our knees touched. “They kidnapped her!”

“I know, but if they wanted to kill Scout or you, they would have done it here.”

Terror filled her wide blue eyes. “You don’t know what they’re capable of. One put a cloth over her mouth to knock her out, Ryder. He knew what he was doing.”

Did he use Chloroform?

It didn’t matter what he’d used; the bastard was fucking organized. Rage burned in my veins.

“We’ll get Scout back. I promise. Did they say anything?”

Her chin trembled as she wiped a tear from her cheek. “They want you to stop the investigation.”

Dread sucked the life right out of me. “He said the same thing to me.”

“What?” Her bloodshot eyes swam with fear. “Who?”

“A guy attacked me, too.”

“Jesus.” She scanned down my body. “Are you okay?”

Despite everything she’d been through, she was still worried about me.

“You’re bleeding.” Her eyes bulged as her gaze met my hip.

“The bullet just grazed me. I’m fine.”

She gasped. “They shot you? Oh my god, are they going to . . . to shoot—”

“No, Piper. I don’t think so.”

“How the hell do you know?” Her shoulders trembled. The adrenaline that had been keeping her steady was probably dissipating.

“He told both of us that he wanted me to stop my investigation. He needs Scout to make sure I do.”

“What investigation?”

“The one into Chui’s sunken yacht.”

“But . . . how can you stop that?”

A knot, sharp and heavy, wedged in my chest. “I can’t.”

“Then what do we do?” She pinned me with her gaze, and the impact of the question cut right through me.
